About The Position

Our investment associates play a central role in executing deals, managing portfolio companies, and supporting firmwide initiatives. Operating in a lean and highly collaborative team structure, associates work closely with partners, senior investment professionals, and portfolio company management teams. The environment is dynamic, analytical, and research-driven, with meaningful exposure to live transactions and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the associate role include the following:

Assess and Execute New Investment Opportunities:

  • Lead preliminary assessment of teasers and CIMs for fit against investment criteria.

  • Drive financial modeling efforts, including LBO, capitalization, and sensitivity analysis.

  • Conduct deep industry research and market mapping to inform investment theses.

  • Evaluate opportunities through the lens of the Gainful Jobs Approach™ and impact alignment.

  • Lead generation of investment memos and contribute to IC presentations.

  • Coordinate due diligence workstreams and interface with third-party advisors.

  • Support structuring discussions and formation of capital structures, including leverage metrics.

  • Manage data room requests and coordinate with external co-investors/lenders. 

Portfolio Company Monitoring and Support:

  • Own monthly and quarterly performance tracking, including KPI analysis and reporting.

  • Lead preparation of quarterly LP reporting sections related to portfolio companies.

  • Review and update quarterly portfolio company valuations. Provide deal leads context and suggested valuations for each portfolio company covered. 

  • Conduct competitive/market updates relevant to each portfolio company.

  • Develop and assess add-on acquisition strategies, including pipeline building.

  • Monitor progress against Gainful Jobs metrics and support impact measurement.

  • Attend and participate in operating review calls with management teams.

  • Be the liaison and support Partners and Deal Leads in all portfolio company requirements.

  • Support strategic projects such as budgeting improvements, pricing initiatives, and operational enhancements.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain CRM accuracy for sourcing, pipeline, and portfolio tracking.

  • Participate in weekly team meetings and present on new opportunities.

  • Mentor and oversee interns and analysts as needed.

  • Stay informed on broader market conditions, including private credit and equity trends.

  • Support business development initiatives and impact-related events.

Qualifications:

  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, private credit, or management consulting.

  • Strong academic background with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or related fields.

  • Advanced financial modeling skills and mastery of Excel.

  • Strong understanding of capital structure, leveraged finance, and transaction dynamics.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; proficient in Word and PowerPoint.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of taking ownership of projects.

  • Demonstrated interest in impact investing and mission-aligned value creation.

  • Willingness to work full-time in person in San Diego, CA.

  • Experience or knowledge in the healthcare sector is a plus.
